Topical pain relief

Some types of pain respond well to oral painkillers, but others are better managed with topical products applied directly.

Joint, muscle and back pain often respond well to topical pain relievers, such as NSAIDs, rubefacients, heat therapy and cooling therapy.

Objectives

This module will tell you how to:

  • Recognise different types of joint, muscle and back pain
  • Understand when to recommend a topical pain relief treatment
  • Be confident to give other treatment options
  • Know when to refer to the pharmacist.

There are many different types of pain, and they can have a variety of causes. Some respond well to oral painkillers, while others might be better managed with a topical product at the site of the problem.
