Tyly Roberts

Tyly Roberts lives and breathes the healthy living ethos – even running marathons to ensure she leads her rural community by example

Fifteen years ago, Tylwyth Roberts – known as Tyly – walked into Rowlands Pharmacy in Bala, Gwynedd, to buy some vitamin tablets. She left with a job, and set about taking every opportunity that came her way, working her way up to accuracy checking technician. She is also the pharmacy’s health champion, and it is her work in this area that led to her receiving a Highly Commended in the Healthy Living Advisor Award, sponsored by Sanofi.

While Tyly understandably spends a lot of her time in the dispensary, she makes sure her time on the shop fl oor really counts, helping customers to quit smoking for good in her role as a smoking cessation level 3 advisor, and conducting weight management consultations. She sees encouraging physical activity – whatever the weather – as key to success, and lives by her advice, regularly training for and taking part in events such as the London Marathon and triathlons.

Last year saw her take the marathon challenge in a different direction when she and two colleagues organised a Moon Walk – a 26 mile night-time trek up two of Wales’ highest passes in Snowdonia. The result was over £20,000 raised for the Brain Tumour Charity, and improved fi tness levels in all 78 people who took part. She says: “We are thinking that we will do another Moon Walk next year, but it takes time to organise and prepare for because the people taking part have to get fit and healthy and practice walking for longer – you can’t just turn up on the night and expect to be able to walk 26 miles – but that’s such a good fit with what we are trying to do as a healthy living pharmacy.”

Outreach work is important to Tyly, and she gives talks to GCSE students at the local high school on healthy lifestyles and pharmacy services. She explains: “It’s about getting them to understand that it’s not just about now, it’s about the next 40 years and beyond.”
