Children aged one to five years need balanced nutrition. As they are growing rapidly, their nutritional needs are different from those of an adult. It is not just a matter of feeding a young child small portions. Food should be high in energy so that the child can obtain the energy he or she needs while eating quite small amounts. But this does not mean feeding them foods and drinks that are high in sugar and fat.

To help you understand how parents might feel, try to talk to a customer in this situation in the pharmacy. Consider asking:

  • How does the mum get a balance of healthy food into her child's diet?
  • How does she get her child to eat vegetables and fruit? Is it a problem or not?
  • Has having a young child changed the family's diet? For better or for worse?
  • How often does the family eat together?
  • How do the parents manage if their child doesn't want to eat healthy food?
  • Is their child a fussy eater? If so, how do they try to handle that?
