Involve them in conversation
It’s important to involve children and young people in discussions about their health – talk directly to them rather than to their parents. Young people who are able to understand what is being said and who can speak for themselves can resent being spoken about and not to when they are present.
The importance of listening
Effective communication is a two-way process. You should listen to and respect the patient’s views about their health and take them seriously, responding to their concerns and preferen
ces without dismissing them.
Try not to interrupt, lecture or criticise – concentrate instead on what they are trying to say and allow them sufficient time to finish. Don’t show impatient body language, such as sighing or foot tapping.
Give them opportunities to ask questions and answer these honestly and to the best of your ability.
