As part of the essential services offered under the terms of the NHS community pharmacy contract, pharmacy teams are involved in promoting public health and signposting. So it is easy to see how reducing alcohol-related harm fits into this aspect of community pharmacy practice. Pharmacy teams can raise awareness of recommended alcohol consumption by displaying relevant posters, or making information leaflets freely available. Pharmacy staff should also be aware of support groups and websites to recommend to patients that will provide further information about alcohol. 

Advanced services, such as a medicines use review or the new medicine service, a health screening consultation or a follow-up to a diabetes or cardiovascular check can also provide opportunities to address lifestyle factors, including alcohol use.
