If the customer vomits within three hours of taking oral emergency contraception, she should contact the pharmacy, a doctor or sexual health clinic for another dose. In addition, if the customer gets severe lower abdominal pain after taking EC, or her next period is light, more than seven days late, or unusual in any other way, she should contact a doctor or sexual health clinic.

After supply of EC, the customer should be given:

  • A reminder that the coil is the most effective method of EC
  • An invitation to have a chlamydia test
  • A reminder that condoms prevent most STIs
  • Advice on further contraception.
