The ever-growing role of pharmacy technicians
At CPPE, we recognise that the roles of pharmacy technicians are always developing, and we are dedicated to supporting pharmacy technicians as they navigate the changing landscape of the profession.
CPPE has just celebrated the one-year anniversary of our PTDP, a programme that supports pharmacy technicians from all sectors of practice in England to develop knowledge and skills in the areas most useful to them.
PTDP is different to many learning programmes because rather than being a set learning pathway, it is centred around each individual learner, what they want to learn and what support they need to develop in their current or prospective roles. PTDP puts the pharmacy technician in the driving seat, and with the support of a dedicated CPPE Education Supervisor, they are able to develop a learning plan that suits them and their individual needs.
Tailored to the individual
There are five core modules: person-centred care and collaboration; clinical knowledge and skills; clinical assessment skills; leadership, and service and quality improvement. These modules can be dipped into as needed – as many or as few as desired – and if learners have a real thirst for more, the entire CPPE portfolio of learning is available.
The programme lasts for nine to 12 months, depending on each individual’s needs. However, the journey doesn’t have to end there. We hope that PTDP will offer every person that enrols a fantastic starting point to their life-long learning and professional development.
One of the main benefits of PTDP is the support offered by the CPPE Education Supervisor over a period of around nine months. The CPPE Education Supervisor team are skilled educators who are passionate about the development of pharmacy technicians. They will meet with you at the start of the programme and then at regular intervals to offer continued support. We have seen hundreds of pharmacy technicians flourish on the programme over the past 12 months, with feedback showing us that the Education Supervisor support has been invaluable for encouraging reflection and professional development.
“We have seen hundreds of pharmacy technicians flourish”
Here’s what one of our PTDP learners told us:
“PTDP has supported me during an important transition from trainee to qualified pharmacy technician. The two key areas of learning I have taken from the programme are reflective practice and identifying my learning needs, and effective communication and patient-centred care. I have applied both areas directly to my practice by becoming more proactive in my professional development, developing my confidence, improving my communication with patients and healthcare professionals, and taking greater responsibility for the quality and safety of the service I provide.”
Get in on the action
PTDP learners have also told us that they value the flexibility of the learning, and that having something so tailored to their individual needs is both empowering and refreshing.
Not only do we offer a wide range of learning materials to support your development, but we are also keen to showcase the diverse and exciting career paths that pharmacy technicians have through a series of inspiring webinars called Pharmacy technician stories: Exploring diverse roles. Each webinar shines the spotlight on a pharmacy technician working in a different role. By signing up to PTDP, you’ll be able to watch back the entire series, to hear from pharmacy technicians working in diverse settings – from primary care networks, critical care, ambulance services, MOD, research to genomics (and many more) – about what their job entails, and how they got there.
The impact of these sessions has been inspiring to see. One pharmacy technician told us that the webinars opened their eyes to the wide variety of career opportunities available within the profession, saying they had no idea there were so many different avenues they could pursue. The stories shared by fellow pharmacy technicians gave them the confidence to explore new areas of practice and think differently about their own career journey.
