module menu icon Diagnosis

There is no definitive test that will diagnose MS. A full medical history, neurological examination and blood tests will be undertaken. Further tests will also be performed in order to help a neurologist come to a diagnosis:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan: used to identify lesions on the brain or spinal cord
  • Lumbar puncture: a sample of cerebrospinal fluid is obtained to look for the presence of specific white blood cell counts, oligoclonal bands and neurofilaments
  • Evoked potentials: this test measures the speed electrical signals travel through the nerve fibres.

EDSS Score

The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) is widely used in the assessment of disability levels in people with MS. EDSS steps 1.0 to 4.5 refer to people with MS who are able to walk without any aid while steps 5.0 to 9.5 are defined by the impairment to walking.
