Fats
As well as being an energy source, fats are a structural component of the body and are an important part of a healthy, balanced diet. Fat is needed in the diet to help with the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Fats are also a source of essential fatty acids, which the body cannot make itself.
Some fats should be avoided, such as industrially produced trans-fatty acids, which are used in the manufacture of some processed foods and are classed as a significant health hazard.1
Examples of food sources of healthy fats include fish and seafood, olives, avocados and nuts.
