Self-care tips
The best way to deal with allergies is to identify the source and avoid it where possible.
Hayfever:
- Keep windows and doors closed, particularly in the early evening
- Check the pollen count and try to stay inside when it is high
- Avoid cutting the grass if affected by grass pollen
- Wear wraparound sunglasses.
House dust mites allergy:
- Vacuum regularly with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter and dust with a damp cloth
- Wash bedding in hot water every seven to 10 days
- Use dust mite-proof covers on mattresses and pillows.
Pet allergy:
- Keep pets off sofas and away from bedrooms – limit them to one room, preferably without a carpet
- Wash and comb pets at least once a fortnight, if possible.
Skin allergy:
- Use hypoallergenic cosmetics and skincare products
- Avoid harsh soaps and perfumes.
Severe allergies:
- Ensure you and other people know how to use your emergency treatment
- Wear a Medic Alert or Medi-Tag medallion or bracelet so that people are aware of your allergy in an emergency.
