Self-care tips

  • Drink plenty of water to keep the body hydrated. During a bout of cystitis, this will help to flush bacteria out of the bladder
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine
  • Avoid sex until the cystitis has cleared up
  • Do not ‘hold on’ when feeling the need to use the toilet
  • Use a heat pack or patch to help relieve abdominal pain
  • Always wipe the bottom from front to back
  • Urinate immediately after sex to help prevent further attacks of cystitis as this will help to flush out bacteria from the urethra.
