In a care home context

Medicines-related safeguarding incidents in care homes include:

  • Excessive use of sedatives
  • Antipsychotic medicines being used to control behaviour
  • Residents missing medicines frequently without being reviewed appropriately.

Safeguarding for people in care services will include:

  • Protecting the rights of residents to live in safety, free from neglect and abuse
  • People and organisations working together to prevent the risk of abuse or neglect, and to stop them from happening
  • Making sure the wellbeing of residents is being promoted, taking their views, wishes, feelings and beliefs into consideration.

Different circumstances might lead you to identify a safeguarding issue. The incident might be identified through your own observations, or those of a carer, relative or other visiting member of the MDT who provides feedback or insights which would need investigating.
