Introduction
Fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) can involve any part of the nail, including the nail plate, nail bed and foot of the nail.1 The responsible fungus is usually the same as that which causes athlete’s foot. When the fungus spreads into the nail structure, the result is a fungal nail infection.2 Fungal infections of the toenails are very common, with one in four people affected during their lifetime. Fungal infection of the fingernail is less common.3
