Scalp problems

Scalp problems can seem trivial to non-sufferers but they cause emotional problems as well as physical symptoms.

They may appear to be relatively minor health concerns, but scalp problems don't just cause physical symptoms €“ they can have a major impact on sufferers' self-esteem too. In this section, we look at three of the most common scalp conditions €“ dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis and hair loss €“ and the treatments that are available from the pharmacy.

Objectives

This module will tell you how to:

  • Recognise the possible causes and symptoms of minor conditions that affect the scalp
  • Understand the actions and uses of different types of treatments available
  • Know when to refer to the pharmacist.

Scalp problems such as scalp psoriasis, hair loss and dandruff can seem trivial to non-sufferers. But these conditions can cause embarrassment and affect a sufferer's confidence. However, help is at hand €“ there are a number of OTC treatments available from the pharmacy for these underestimated ailments.
