Innovation Award HCs

The Innovation Award category saw Callum Dudding and Martin Murphy take home Highly Commended.

Callum Dudding, Witham Late Night Pharmacy, Hull

Having worked at Witham Late Night Pharmacy for over 10 years, Callum Dudding has established himself as “one of the main cogs within the pharmacy”, according to his nominator and pharmacy manager, Danielle White. “Callum goes above and beyond to ensure our patients get what they need, when they need it. Sometimes visiting patient’s homes in order to explain how to use monitored dosage systems and electronic dosing systems.” And this is certainly what caught the judges’ eye, earning him highly commended in the Innovation category.

The pharmacy customers have access to the Pivotell system, which is a device that Callum sets up. The flying saucer shaped device dispenses medication at set times of day and alerts patients as to when they need to take their medication. Currently 12 patients are using the system successfully, which has been a real gamer changer and a step up from the NOMAD system they were previously using. Callum also checks up with patients in their own homes to ensure everything is running smoothly for them. He even ensures he keeps an eye on new referrals in case the system isn’t suitable for them, for example, one patient broke the device multiple times trying to retrieve medication. Callum referred them back to the council to find a better solution. “As a pharmacy technician, to help organise the new dossette system to help the patients is excellent and great help for the community,” said Nicole Tolkin, RoE judge and 2022 Spotlight winner. “Great to see how far he has come and taking on new challenges.” We can’t wait to see what you do next Callum!

Martin Murphy, Right Medicine Pharmacy, Stirling

Martin Murphy recently took on a new role as operations lead at Right Medicine Pharmacy (RMP) HQ, and wowed the judges with not just one, but two excellent examples of pharmacy innovation – securing himself highly commended in the Innovation category. Martin was instrumental in helping to deliver the rollout of the Masimo device, a non-invasive monitoring technology. The pharmacy was one of just three retailers to introduce the device from the US to the UK, and the only store in Scotland to do so. “On top of this Martin facilitated a question-based research project in each trial site to gain understanding from the patient group it was aimed at around suitability but also insight to the patient group to help Massimo,” added nominator and RMP operations director, Richard Stephenson. “During this survey of over 500 people it resulted in several sales of the product all down to the nature of the questions.”

Martin also oversaw the rollout of PharmDel, a new delivery technology, which means the dispensing team have been able to get back to customers and dispensing and the drivers can now manage deliveries, instead of staff doubling up on jobs. Janice Perkins, chair of the RPS Community Pharmacy Expert Advisory Group, said: “Martin has linked his operational and technology skills together to support the delivery of innovative health tech services for his organisation. He’s pioneered the introduction of new ways of working to benefit patients... He’s supported his colleagues enabling this to be rolled out and implemented across the estate taking on board, team and patient feedback to get the best possible results.”
