Boots UK, Bridgend
The team at Boots UK Bridgend blew our judges away with their sheer number of achievements, sweeping highly commended in the Pharmacy Team of the Year category. The team work with around 30 care homes in the local area and strive to provide a patient-centred care approach to determine suitable alternative medication aids for vulnerable patients who want to maintain their independence and remain in their own homes. “Their success is definitely a team effort,” said Janice Perkins, RoE judge and chair of the RPS Community Pharmacy Expert Advisory Group. “There is a great team ethos of training and development so that services workload can be shared across the whole team to ensure continuity for patients.”
This year, the team has focussed on the DMR opportunities available in the area. They have loaded all their care home patients onto the Choose Pharmacy system and ensured the whole team has been up-skilled to understand the value of DMRs. In doing so, they have seen performance grow over the last 12 months from around 11-60 consultations.
Commenting on their achievements, Reena Barai, RoE judge, pharmacy owner and co-founder of the Female Pharmacy Leaders Network, said: “An excellent example of skill-mix, up-skilling, service provision and expansion and community reach.
“They are identifying needs in their local community and then developing targeted material to promote their services to help these patients. They have drive, ambition and a can-do attitude underpinned by education, training and an understanding of what their community needs.”
Day Lewis, Stockwell
Day Lewis Stockwell has spearheaded initiatives that have significantly impacted the wellbeing of the pharmacy’s diverse population, securing them highly commended in the Pharmacy Team of the Year category. One of the most pressing issues the team identified in their community was the prevalence of undiagnosed hypertension, coupled with poor treatment adherence among those already diagnosed. With unwavering commitment, the team fully engaged with the new hypertension service, implementing a proactive approach to screening and management. They achieved a remarkable 100 per cent attendance rate for ABPM tests, significantly reducing waiting times and improving patient outcomes. The team received glowing reviews from the judges, who called them “trailblazing” with Ade Williams, MBE, lead pharmacist at Bedminster Pharmacy in Bristol adding: “They embody the community pharmacy spirit of collaboration, innovation and compassionate care. They really do set a benchmark of excellence, all demonstrated by remarkable performance and results.”
“They have managed to build links with patients from backgrounds that can be often overlooked and who miss out on key pharmacy services… They recognise and are building on the difference they can make by constantly adding value and meeting the community’s needs,” added RoE judge and chair of the RPS Community Pharmacy Expert Advisory Group, Janice Perkins. “The team have truly embraced the challenges faced by their local community by fully utilising their diverse skills and local knowledge to identify and improve health and wellbeing.”
