Consider how you can attract new parents to your pharmacy. What is unique about your pharmacy? How can it be improved? Discuss with your team, and any parents that you know, what has made them develop loyalty to one particular place.
Questions to think about include:
- Do you understand what it's like to be a new parent? If you don't have the experience yourself, consider asking those who have. Understanding and showing empathy to customers is a great way to keep them coming back
- Do you understand the anxieties that new parents face about 'doing the right thing'? Ask a new parent about the pressures they face from other parents, family and the media. How can you help a new parent to gain a balanced view on feeding their baby and confidence in putting this into practice?
- Whose advice should a parent listen to on infant feeding? Do an internet search for useful information on infant feeding for new parents. Discuss this with your team. Which is useful and appropriate and which is not?
- Which members of the wider healthcare team give advice on infant care and feeding during the first six months of a baby's life? Do you know, for example, your local health visitors? Do they come to the pharmacy?
- Could you ask a health visitor to come to a team meeting at your pharmacy and discuss what they do? An understanding of the health visitor's role and making sure you know when to refer will give you confidence when talking to new parents and keep them coming back to your pharmacy
- What are the most common feeding problems that new parents encounter? Again, you could ask a health visitor to share their experiences.
