With summer in full swing, people across the UK will be setting their sights on getting outdoors and active, whether at home or abroad. But while the warmer weather can be all fun and games, it also brings with it health hazards such as hayfever and the risk of first aid incidents. Pharmacy teams can be on hand with self care advice and product recommendations that can make it all right.

Clarityn is the only branded allergy tablet to contain loratadine, to provide relief from a runny nose, sneezing, itchy watery eyes and itchy nose or throat associated with hayfever, according to manufacturer Bayer. The product is available in packs of seven, 14, 30 and 60 tablets and one tablet should be taken once daily. Clarityn also comes in a fast-melt format, Clarityn Rapide, which is available in a 10-tablet pack, Bayer adds.

Germolene Antiseptic Cream is a dual action treatment to ease pain and help prevent infections of minor cuts and grazes, minor burns, scalds, blisters, stings, insect bites and spots, explains manufacturer Bayer. The local anaesthetic phenol numbs the pain and helps relieve the itching and irritation of minor skin injuries, while the antiseptic chlorhexidine digluconate helps prevent secondary infection, according to the company. The cream is also an emollient, which Bayer says helps to soften the skin and soothe minor skin conditions, such as chapped or rough skin.

Care antiseptic first aid cream can be recommend to customers throughout the warmer months to treat minor burns, abrasions and nappy rash, according to manufacturer Thornton & Ross. The cream comes in a 30g tube and is suitable for adults, the elderly and children.

The Becodefence range, formerly known as Prevalin, provides localised hayfever defence at the first sign of symptoms, helping to stop symptoms from developing in three minutes and working five times faster than tablets, according to manufacturer Perrigo. The range consists of Becodefence, Becodefence Plus and Becodefence Kids – for ages 6-12. Beconase hayfever nasal spray is an effective non-drowsy medication for adults that can provide up to 24-hour relief, when used twice daily, from the eight symptoms of hayfever: sneezing, itchy nose, runny nose, red eyes, itchy eyes, watery eyes, sinus discomfort and nasal decongestion, the company adds.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has launched Pirinase allergy 120ct nasal spray to prevent and relieve symptoms of airborne allergens, as well as relieving itchy watery eyes for 30 days. The launch coincides with GSK’s £4 million marketing campaign for Pirinase, which includes TV, out of home, PR, digital and social media. The campaign will include responsive TV activation in line with the Met Office pollen count by region, which will ensure shoppers are receiving the right message, at the right time across the allergy season and beyond, GSK adds.
