Other MSK conditions

  • Paget’s disease of bone occurs because of a disruption to the process by which bone is renewed, leading to more bone cells being produced than is usually the case. This means that bones become weaker and hence more bendable. In turn, this can cause damage to nearby joints, and changes in the shape of the bones.

The pelvis, spine, legs, skull and shoulders are most likely to be affected.

There is no cure for Paget’s disease of bone, but bisphosphonates are used to help control bone regeneration.

Painkillers and supportive therapies such as physiotherapy may be of benefit. Ensuring adequate levels of calcium and vitamin D can also help.

  • Plantar fasciitis results from damage to the band of tissue running underneath the foot, from the heel to the base of the toes. This means the arch of the foot isn’t as well supported, causing pain on walking.

Painkillers and specially made insoles or foot supports called orthotics can be helpful.
