MDTs in hospital
There are many different healthcare professionals working as part of the MDT in hospital settings. Every Trust will have different ways of working, organisational structures and communication pathways. As you meet different team members, you may find it useful to ask some questions, so you can make the most of their skills.
There are several ways that the MDTs in hospitals can communicate.
Modes of communicaiton
There may be a clinical MDT handover or a clinical handover (among the medical team). At the handover the MDT will talk about the existing patients and how they are progressing, any new patients who have arrived or are arriving, and highlight which patients have gone home. The medical team’s handover, and potentially the nursing team’s handover will be updated based on this meeting
The clinical MDT huddles are short briefings where the MDT team may come together to share key general information, improve patient flow, and to identify patient safety concerns, including staffing. These are usually held once or twice a day
These meetings are usually less frequent. They may be used to discuss complex patient cases or to bring together the MDT to talk about management plans. These meetings are usually attended by clinical leads.
