Introduction
Gout is a form of arthritis in which urate crystals form in and around joints, most commonly the big toes, knees, ankles and fingers, causing sudden bouts of severe pain, swelling and heat.
A gout attack can be extremely painful, so patients are usually motivated to try and get symptoms under control or reduce the risk of another exacerbation. Someone with a decent understanding of their condition is much more likely to comply with measures that have been recommended.
