module menu icon Symptom management

Symptom management is an essential component of MS care. While DMTs reduce disease activity and modify disease progression, the ongoing management of symptoms allows for people to function in their daily activities.

Modifiable risk factors for symptom management, prevention of relapses or progression of MS include:

  • Smoking: advise people with MS to stop smoking as this may increase the progression of disability
  • Exercise: encourage people with MS to exercise regularly. Moderate progressive resistance training and aerobic activity will have beneficial effects especially on mobility and fatigue
  • Vaccinations: advise people with MS who are on DMTs that live vaccines may be contraindicated. Flu vaccinations should be offered to people with MS in accordance with national guidelines but people with RRMS should be told of the possible risk of relapse after the flu vaccination
  • Caffeine: encourage people with MS to limit caffeine intake as this can be a source of bladder irritation, leading to urinating more frequently or causing sleep disturbance
  • Sleep: encourage good sleeping habits as fatigue can play a large part in the disease course.
