Pregnancy, breastfeeding and early life

In the first 1,000 days of life (from conception to roughly a child’s second birthday), growth, especially brain development, is rapid. A healthy, balanced and nutrient-dense diet for the mother and baby is vital to ensure the correct macronutrients and micronutrients are obtained in sufficient quantities to support development and growth of the entire human body. This is essential for brain development, and the function and growth of a healthy immune system, all of which affects the child throughout their life.

A folic acid supplement is recommended for women prior to conception and up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, to reduce the risk of neural tube defects.
