It’s been five years since pharmacy technicians first had to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as healthcare professionals. As such, pharmacy technicians can now be held legally and professionally accountable for their activities. In fact, in law and professional regulation, there is no distinction between how pharmacy technicians and pharmacists are viewed.

Confidence that pharmacy technicians understand their professional responsibility is important because until it is established, some pharmacists may remain reluctant to delegate tasks.

Being professional is more than just doing your CPD. It is also about undertaking tasks only if you are competent to do so, recognising your limitations and taking responsibility for work that you are asked to do.

The aim of this article is to raise understanding of professionalism and encourage pharmacy technicians to strive for professional excellence and improve health outcomes for patients. A range of activities are included to support your personal development and practice. Work through the activities and discuss with your colleagues.
