The best way to deal with allergies is to identify the source and avoid it where possible.
Hayfever:
- Keep windows and doors closed, particularly in the early evening
- Check the pollen count and stay inside when it is high
- Avoid cutting the grass, if affected by grass pollen
- Wear wraparound sunglasses.
House dust mites:
- Replace carpets with wood, linoleum or tile flooring
- Vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth
- Wash bedding in hot water every seven to 10 days
- Use dust mite-proof covers on mattresses and pillows.
Pet allergy:
- Keep pets away from bedrooms and limit them to one room, preferably one without a carpet
- Wash pets at least once a fortnight, if possible.
Skin allergy:
- Use hypoallergenic cosmetics and skincare products
- Avoid harsh soaps and perfumes.
Severe allergies:
- Ensure you and other people, such as family, friends and colleagues, know how to use your emergency treatment (e.g. Epipen)
- Wear a Medic Alert or Medi Tag medallion or bracelet so that people are aware of your allergy in an emergency.
