Cradle cap is a common condition in babies that usually appears within the first two months.
Also known as seborrhoeic dermatitis, cradle cap is thought to occur as a result of hormonal changes, which stimulate secretions from the oil glands in the skin.
What are the symptoms?
Cradle cap appears as thick, yellowish scales on the baby's scalp. It doesn't hurt and is not a sign of poor hygiene. Cradle cap usually disappears by the age of two, although some cases do persist for longer. It can also sometimes spread to the face or neck. If this is the case, refer to the pharmacist.
What are the treatment options?
The scales should not be picked off, but they can be loosened by rubbing a little baby oil onto the child's head at night. The softened scales can then be sponged or washed off in the morning. Special cradle cap creams and shampoos are also available. Examples: Dentinox Cradle Cap Treatment Shampoo, Metanium Cradle Cap Cream.
