Antibiotics are not usually needed for a sore throat, unless it is caused by a bacterial infection. Sore throats tend to get better on their own, in around three to seven days. However, there are OTC medicines that can alleviate symptoms in the meantime.

Pastilles and lozenges

Sucking any pastille, lozenge or boiled sweet can help to relieve a sore throat. This is because sucking produces saliva, which helps to lubricate the throat. Many pastilles and lozenges contain soothing ingredients, such as lemon and honey, to relieve irritation and stop the throat feeling dry. Customers with diabetes should use throat sweets with caution as many have a high sugar content, although there are sugar-free versions available. Other customers may also prefer a sugar-free alternative. Example: Strepsils Strawberry Sugar-Free Lozenges.

Antiseptic lozenges

Many lozenges also contain antiseptic agents, such as benzalkonium, dichlorobenzyl, hexylresorcinol and tyrothricin. Examples: Beechams Max Strength Sore Throat Relief, Strepsils Original, Tyrozets.

Local anaesthetics

Lozenges and throat sprays may contain local anaesthetics such as benzocaine to ease pain and difficulty swallowing. They should not be used for more than five days. Lozenges are not suitable for elderly people or children under 12 years, while sprays should not be used in children under six years. Examples: Merocaine, Ultra Chloraseptic Anaesthetic Throat Spray.

Painkillers/anti-inflammatories

Paracetamol, ibuprofen or flurbiprofen can ease the pain of a sore throat. Example: Strefen Lozenges.

If your customer's throat is very inflamed, it can help to gargle with soluble aspirin dissolved in a glass of water. It is important not to swallow the aspirin if taking other medicines (aspirin should not be taken by children under 16 years). Remember to check for any other contraindications for using aspirin.

Salt water

Gargling with salt water can be a good way to relieve a sore throat. Customers should add a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water and spit it out after gargling.
