Straining to pass stools can also cause another condition €“ haemorrhoids, or piles. These are swollen blood vessels around the anus and rectum. Additional symptoms include itching around the anus; discomfort or pain during and immediately after opening the bowels; a feeling that the bowels are not completely empty; anal discharge, and spots of bright red blood after passing stools.
As well as being caused by straining to go to the toilet, haemorrhoids can be caused by pregnancy, childbirth, irregular eating habits, poor toilet habits and being overweight.
There are a number of OTC products available to treat piles and relieve the symptoms:
Astringents €“ these form a protective layer over the affected area and help to relieve local irritation and inflammation. Examples: Preparation H, Anusol.
Anti-inflammatory agents €“ hydrocortisone reduces inflammation when applied topically. These products shouldn't be used by those under 18 or during pregnancy. Example: Anusol Plus HC
Local anaesthetics €“ these help to relieve pain, burning and itching. They should not be used for longer than two weeks. Example: Germoloids Cream.
