The benefits of exercise extend beyond having healthy bones €“ it is good for the body generally, and also good for the mind. It is very easy for older people to become socially isolated, and this brings with it the risk of loneliness, depression and other mental health problems.

Older people should stay as active as they can, both mentally and physically. Undertaking voluntary work, visiting friends and having enjoyable hobbies are all positive steps that can be taken, as is trying something new. There are lots of clubs and classes around, so know where to point people to for more information if they ask or you think they might benefit from a little more mental or physical stimulation or social interaction with others.
