Common causes
- Pollution, smoke, chlorine in swimming pools and low humidity due to air conditioning or central heating
- Glare and bright lights
- Concentrating for long periods (eye strain)
- Foreign bodies such as dust, grit or sand trapped between the eyelid and eyeball.
What are the symptoms?
The eyes may look red and feel tired, sore or irritated. Dryness can also be a symptom.
What are the treatment options?
Options include eye drops containing astringents such as witch hazel, which soothe the eye. Example: Optrex Sore Eyes Eye Drops.
Washing the eye with saline (salt in water) or an OTC eye wash can help to wash away any foreign bodies.
If eye dryness is the main symptom, lubricating eye drops may help. Example: blink intensive tears.
