A verruca (plantar wart) is caused by the human papilloma virus, which gets into the skin through a cut or minor abrasion.
What are the symptoms?
Verrucas appear as flattened, discrete lesions, usually on the ball of the foot, the underside of the big toe or the heel, either alone or in clusters. Multiple small black spots may be visible in the verruca. These are not, as some people believe, the 'root' of the verruca, but are caused by bleeding in small blood vessels. Verrucas can be tender when squeezed and may cause discomfort if they press on nerves when walking.
What are the treatment options?
Salicylic acid, silver nitrate, and lactic acid in combination with salicylic acid destroy the skin; most take up to 12 weeks to work. Example: Bazuka Gel.
More recent OTC treatments 'freeze' the verruca in just one application so that it clears up in 10-14 days. These products cannot be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women. Examples: Scholl Freeze Verruca and Wart Remover, Wartner Wart and Verruca Remover.
