Sometimes bites and stings can't be avoided. OTC products to help relieve irritation and swelling are available and include:

Topical anaesthetics

Benzocaine and lidocaine help to reduce the irritation and pain by numbing the area. Examples: Lanacane, Wasp-eze Spray, Dermidex.

Topical corticosteroids

Hydrocortisone reduces swelling and redness. It should be applied very thinly and evenly, but should not be used on the face or by children under 10 years without medical advice. Example: Hc45 Cream.

Topical antihistamines

Diphenhydramine and mepyramine help to reduce redness, swelling and itching. Examples: Benadryl Skin Allergy Relief Cream, Anthisan Bite & Sting Cream.

Oral antihistamines

Chlorphenamine, acrivastine and cetirizine work in the same way as topical antihistamines, but don't just have a local effect. Some oral antihistamines, especially chlorphenamine, can cause drowsiness. Examples: Piriton, Benadryl Allergy Relief.
