Acne:
- Help prevent scarring by resisting the temptation to squeeze, pinch or pick spots
- Use acne treatment regularly and give it time to work (at least two months)
- Wash skin with a gentle cleanser morning and night. Avoid very hot water, strong detergents and harsh astringents. Gently pat skin dry with a clean towel
- Regularly wash hair, especially if it falls over the face
- There is no evidence that greasy or sweet foods cause or aggravate acne. However, a good, balanced diet is important for maintaining general health
- There is no evidence that acne is made worse by wearing make-up, but customers could try using products that are oilfree and non-comedogenic (i.e. won't clog pores).
Cold sores:
- Try not to pick or touch a cold sore, other than when applying topical products, to avoid causing more pain or spreading the virus
- Treatments should be dabbed on, not rubbed
- Always wash hands after touching cold sores and applying treatments
- Do not share items that come into contact with cold sores, such as towels, lipsticks or cutlery
- If sunlight triggers cold sores, try using a lip balm with a sun protection factor of 15 or higher. Use a pot rather than a stick to prevent contamination
- For contact lens wearers, ensure hands are washed carefully before handling lenses as there is a risk of infecting the eyes with the virus.
