module menu icon Preventing tooth decay

The good news is that tooth decay can be prevented. The key to preventing this condition from developing is to keep the teeth free from accumulating plaque. To do this, teeth should be brushed twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and the spaces between the teeth should be flossed daily, too. Rinsing with a mouthwash that contains fluoride (e.g. Listerine, Colgate Plax) is also a good idea as this can help to remove bacteria from hard-to-reach areas of the mouth, as well as from the tongue, the gums and the roof of the mouth. Children aged six and over should use a mouthwash formulated for their age group (e.g. Aquafresh Big Teeth Mouth Wash, Listerine Smart Rinse).

Tooth decay can also be reduced by limiting the number of snacks eaten between meals €“ especially sweet foods; having regular check ups at the dentist to help identify problems before they progress, and chewing sugar-free gum after eating as this helps to stimulate saliva €“ one of the body's natural defences against the acid produced by the bacteria in plaque.
