Self care tips

There are many oral care products available, but maintaining good oral hygiene through regular brushing and flossing is the best way to help prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Other tips include:

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to reduce damage to tooth enamel
  • After brushing, spit out toothpaste, but don't rinse the mouth or use a mouthwash straight away because this lessens the effect of the fluoride in the toothpaste
  • Replace toothbrushes and brush heads every three months or before if bristles become out of shape
  • Use an antibacterial toothpaste or mouthwash to help prevent gum disease
  • People who are prone to cavities can use a fluoride mouthwash at a separate time to brushing
  • Clean the tongue with either a toothbrush or special scraper to help remove bacteria
  • Eat a healthy diet and avoid sugary foods
  • Stop smoking, as it is a risk factor for developing gum disease
  • Have regular dental check-ups.

When to refer to the pharmacist

Most of the oral health problems that you will come across in your pharmacy will be minor. However, they may have the potential to lead to more serious conditions. You should always refer to the pharmacist anyone taking medication and any customers with:

  • Symptoms such as indigestion, heartburn or breathing problems
  • Bleeding gums or prolonged tooth pain
  • Sore, red patches on the tongue or gums
  • A recurrent mouth ulcer/ a mouth ulcer that has not resolved after two to three weeks
  • Discolouration or coating of the tongue
  • A red or swollen tongue or mouth piercing
  • Crops of mouth ulcers
  • Mouth ulcers accompanied by ulcers elsewhere on the body.
