Brushing
Teeth should be brushed twice a day (one occasion being last thing at night) with a fluoridecontaining toothpaste. Examples: Colgate Total Pro Gum Health, Oral-B 1-2-3.
Specialist toothpastes are also available for specific needs, such as whitening and for sensitive teeth. Examples: Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief, Arm & Hammer Advanced Whitening.
Good brushing technique is paramount as it is important to remove plaque from all the nooks and crannies around the teeth and gums. Most brushes should be replaced every three months as the bristles on a toothbrush wear out with use and can become less effective. Electric toothbrushes may be helpful for customers with dexterity problems. As with manual toothbrushes, brush heads should be replaced on a regular basis.
Flossing/interdental brushing
This is a vital part of oral hygiene as it helps to remove plaque and food debris from between the teeth. When used correctly, it is also very effective at removing plaque from under the gum line, which is often missed with brushing alone.
There are different types of dental floss, tape and interdental brushes available, but research has suggested that they all have similar benefits when used on a daily basis. Therefore, customer preference for what they find more comfortable to use should be taken into account when recommending a product.
Flossing is best done in front of a mirror to ensure that it reaches just below the gum line. Examples: Den Tek Natural Floss Pick, TePe Interdental Brushes, Colgate Total Pro Gum Health Floss and Interdental Brushes.
