What are the sinuses?

The sinuses are small, air-filled spaces in the cheekbones and forehead. Sinusitis is inflammation (redness and swelling) that can block the sinuses so mucus cannot drain into the nose as usual.

Acute sinusitis is very common and usually caused by a virus, although it can be complicated by bacterial infection in about two in 100 cases. Ordinarily, acute sinusitis takes two to three weeks to resolve on its own, and most people will get better without the need for antibiotics.
