Hair loss can range from dull, thin, lifeless hair through to hair loss (alopecia) and baldness. Many men suffer from male pattern baldness, which is typically hereditary and a gradual process. By the age of 35, almost 40 per cent of men will experience some degree of hair loss. This type of hair loss is irreversible, but the process can be slowed down and existing hair can be strengthened.
Women can also suffer from hair loss because of a range of factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress and anxiety, illness, hair extensions and dieting. Some women may discover that their hair simply appears dull, lifeless and is perhaps thinning; others may experience their hair thinning in random patches, which is known as 'diffuse alopecia'.
What are the treatment options?
Hereditary hair loss can be treated with minoxidil. This is a P-medicine that can stop hair loss in most people and may also encourage hair regrowth. Examples: Regaine Foam, Regaine for Women.
For hereditary and other forms of hair loss, specially formulated food supplements for healthy hair growth are available. These are designed to maintain hair growth by nourishing the hair from within with a variety of essential nutrients. Examples: Viviscal Maximum Strength, Pil-Food.
