People who are prone to stomach pain and cramps seem to suffer on a regular basis – over a third experience abdominal cramps at least once a week. Women are more likely to suffer than men, and older people are commonly affected. Almost 40 per cent of sufferers describe their symptoms as severe, while 23 per cent report major distress.

The main symptoms include:

  • Pain in the lower abdominal area and colicky-type cramps
  • Bloating or gas
  • Pressure or a feeling of tightness in the abdomen
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation.
