For this session, use our digestive health article, as well as other sources of information, to strengthen your knowledge of the digestive system and the problems that can occur. This will give you more insight and information to pass on to your customers. At this time of year, popular magazines and newspapers carry lots of articles on Christmas tummy troubles.
Have a look at these too to get an idea of what your customers are reading. Discuss with your team whether or not you agree with the advice you read. You can use information sources you may have in the pharmacy, such as other articles, or OTC medicines guides, manufacturer literature (e.g. on antacids, proton pump inhibitors and H2 antagonists, laxatives, anti-diarrhoeals, haemorrhoid preparations, IBS remedies) and websites (e.g. NHS Choices).
Take time when dealing with people suffering from digestive complaints as you may be able to spot the possibility of a serious problem which requires a doctor's attention. Your intervention and referral to the pharmacist could help the person to make a good recovery. For further inspiration, visit the websites listed in the 'information sources' section.
You will find plenty of information on digestive health, including expert opinion, in our article. In order to make it useful and relevant to your work, think about the following:
- What questions would you ask a customer who says she is constipated? What do you need to find out before giving advice?
- Consider how you might broach your concerns with a customer who has repeatedly bought a medicine that could indicate a serious bowel problem. Discuss this with your team and find some phrases you would be comfortable to use with a customer
- Identify six foods you could suggest that a customer with reflux should avoid or cut down on
- How do the following medications work: alginates, antacids, proton pump inhibitors, H2 antagonists? Refresh your knowledge of the appropriate uses and recommendations for each type of medication. Discuss with your pharmacist.
- What advice on hygiene would you give to a family affected by diarrhoea?
