There are a variety of effective treatment options available to treat BV. Gels containing lactic acid and glycogen (example: Canesbalance) help to restore vaginal pH to the correct levels, relieve unpleasant odour and abnormal discharge and maintain normal bacterial growth.
BV can also be treated with a course of oral antibiotics or by using an antibiotic vaginal gel or cream. These products are only available on prescription and it is important that customers are advised to take or use the products as directed by their GP. Antibiotics are effective at treating most cases of BV, but customers should be aware that the condition can reoccur.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women or women who are experiencing any pain or discomfort should be referred to the pharmacist. It is important that other more serious conditions or causes are ruled out before treatment is recommended.
