Most fungal skin infections are caused by types of fungi known as dermatophytes. They affect 10-20 per cent of people at some point in their lives.

The skin, scalp and nails are prone to fungal infections because these areas offer ideal conditions for dermatophytes to flourish in. Fungal skin infections are divided into groups depending on what type of organism is involved and its location on the body.
