Topical painkillers should not be applied to broken, irritated or infected skin. The eyes, mouth and other mucous membranes should also be avoided. Many of these products are not recommended for children.

Topical NSAIDs can be absorbed into the bloodstream, so they may not be suitable for people with asthma who are sensitive to aspirin, people with diabetes, children under the age of 12, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or people who are taking oral NSAIDs. Refer these customers to the pharmacist.

Topical NSAIDs should not be used for longer than seven days without medical advice.

Rubefacients should not be used just before or after having a hot bath or shower as these can enhance the burning sensation.
