A new study published in the journal Microbiome shows that the prebiotic supplement Bimuno (B-GOS) may be an effective alternative to reduce GI symptoms in autistic children, the company adds. Fibre plays a number of important roles in digestion, helping form stools, remove toxins and provide a food source for beneficial species of bacteria in the gut. A low fibre diet can starve sources of friendly bacteria, allowing more pathogenic strains to thrive, which can cause digestive symptoms. Increasing fruit and vegetable intake and taking a gentle fibre supplement such as Lepicol may help, says manufacturer ADM Protexin. Lepicol is a three in one combination of psyllium husk fibre, which contributes to the maintenance of normal bowel transit; five live bacterial strains to help rebalance gut microflora; and the prebiotic inulin, says ADM Protexin.
