Clever inhaler tracks doses

An innovative new asthma inhaler is now available. The device accurately tracks the inhalations, enabling patients and healthcare professionals to monitor adherence. The Fostair NEXThaler contains beclometasone and formoterol and is licensed for the maintenance treatment of asthma in adults. It provides three feedback signs €“ a click sound when a dose is released, a distinctive lactose taste and a dose counter €“ as confirmation that the full dose has been delivered.

The dose counter decreases by one count only after a successful inhalation, to help patients keep track of the number of doses they have taken. According to manufacturer Chiesi Ltd, dose counters on current dry powder inhalers only record the number of times the device is primed or loaded, rather than the number of inhalations.
