Impact of severe asthma revealed

An Asthma UK survey has revealed the devastating impact of severe asthma, with three-quarters of sufferers requiring regular emergency care.

Of the 253 people who took part in the survey, nearly half had been hospitalised more than 10 times since they were diagnosed, 66 per cent said the condition made them anxious and 55 per cent reported depression.

The vast majority (96 per cent) said that the general public don't understand what it's like to live with the constant unpredictability of severe asthma, while two-thirds reported being held back at work or school and the same proportion said that the condition damaged their social life.

Dr Samantha Walker, director of research and policy at Asthma UK, said: €We know that some people may struggle for months or years before they're given the right diagnosis and right treatment for severe asthma. We also know that some people with severe asthma don't respond well to any of the treatments currently available and urgently need new ones to help manage their symptoms.€

Asthma UK's severe asthma survey is still open for responses and can be accessed by clicking here.
