Lack of social care for cancer patients

At least 160,000 people living with cancer in the UK are constantly or often left housebound due to a lack of support, reveals Macmillan Cancer Support's report Hidden at Home €“ the social care needs of people with cancer. The report shows that around two-thirds (64 per cent) of people with cancer have practical or personal care needs, including being unable to completely get in or out of bed, cook food or get dressed. Half of cancer patients who have support needs only get help from their family and friends, while half of those who provide informal care do not receive any support themselves. €Macmillan is urgently calling on the NHS and local authorities to recognise that people with cancer do have social care needs and they desperately need more support,€ says Macmillan's interim chief executive Lynda Thomas. €Macmillan is keen to work with these organisations to help people reclaim their lives €“ and dignity €“ from cancer.€
