People adopting self care methods could save the NHS £1.7 billion per annum by preventing 25 million GP appointments and five million A&E visits used each year for self-treatable illnesses.
In light of this, the PAGB has published an action plan which calls on the new Labour Government to focus on six key actions in their first 100 days to help the public, NHS and wider economy realise the benefits of self care.
The key points delivered to Wes Streeting in a letter by Michelle Riddalls, CEO at the PAGB, covered points which focussed on “embedding self care fully in primary care,” “improving patients awareness of, and confidence in, self care, to empower them to access the right care at the right place,” and “promoting an attractive environment for the OTC sector, to ensure its continued investment in, and prioritisation of, the UK market”.
Reducing the burden on the NHS ahead of winter illnesses season is crucial, and the plan set forward by the PAGB highlights “the quick and cost-effectives wins that prioritising self care will deliver for the new Government”.
