Putting feet first

More than 400,000 people with diabetes in England are not receiving the recommended annual foot check, despite it being important in the prevention of diabetes-related amputation, according to Diabetes UK. The figures, based on NHS data, equate to 27.7 per cent of people with type 1 diabetes and 13.3 per cent with type 2 diabetes not having their feet checked. More than 100 diabetes-related amputations are carried out every week in the UK €“ up to 80 per cent of which could have been prevented.

€Given the high levels of preventable diabetes-related amputations, it is unacceptable that the proportion of people getting the check has hardly changed over recent years,€ says Barbara Young, chief executive of Diabetes UK. As part of its 'Putting Feet First' campaign, the charity has published a new leaflet, What To Expect At Your Annual Foot Check, which is available to download at: www.diabetes.org.uk/putting-feet-first.
