Question mark over health checks

Question mark over health checks

A group of MPs has expressed doubts over the value of the NHS Health Check service. The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee raised concerns that the NHS Health Check, which is available to everyone aged 40 to 70 in England, was introduced without a thorough evidence base behind it. The MPs also called for patients to be given more information about the pros and cons of health screening before receiving a health check.

In response, Dr Richard Vautrey, deputy chair of the British Medical Association's GP committee, called for €a full review of the benefits of the current NHS Health Check programme,€ and measures to €protect patients from companies promoting inappropriate health screening€. However, pharmacy bodies have argued that the service can be extremely valuable to patients as long as it is properly implemented.
